Why Is My Ceiling Staining, and What Does It Mean for My Roof?

A ceiling stain is a roof's delayed message. Water that enters a roof rarely drops straight down; it travels along a deck or rafter, sometimes for feet, before it finds a ceiling. The stain therefore tells you that water is getting in, but not exactly where — and tracing it is the first job.

Reading the stain

A stain that grows during rain and stops after it is an active leak. A stain that appears after rain, and dries slowly, may be water that entered during the storm and travelled before dropping. A stain near a wall, a chimney or a valley points toward flashing; a stain in the middle of a ceiling, far from any penetration, points toward a field failure or a valley above it.

What a stain does not tell you

A stain does not tell you the size of the failure. A small flashing split can produce a large stain over a season, and a large stain can come from a single failed boot. It also does not tell you whether the deck underneath is sound — that needs an attic and roof check, not a ceiling repair.

The order of work

Fix the roof entry point first, then the ceiling. Repairing a ceiling while the roof still leaks only hides the next stain. A leak inspection should photograph the failed detail, describe the repair, and only then discuss interior repair — which, for a roofing scope, is a separate trade.
